Mechanical Breakdown Insurance Claims
We understand that sinking feeling you get when something happens to your car.
So if you suffer a mechanical breakdown we’re here to make sure your claim is as easy and stress-free as possible.
How to Make a Claim
To make a claim for Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI), simply follow these steps.
If your car is safe to drive:
- Call us on 0800 809 700 (Mon-Fri 8am – 5pm).
If it’s after hours, take it home and call us on 0800 809 700 (Mon-Fri 8am – 5pm). - We’ll email you a claim form and a list of authorised repairers to choose from and take your car to.
If your car needs towing:
- Call 0800 581 581 (anytime 24/7)*
Then call us on 0800 809 700 (Mon-Fri 8am – 5pm). We’ll email you a claim form and a list of authorised repairers for the AA to tow your car to.
*If you have AA Roadside Assistance cover, we’ll reimburse reasonable towing costs to your home or nearest authorised repairer. If you don’t have this cover, you’ll be able to join the AA on the spot, so they can tow your car to your home or nearest authorised repairer (or store your car and take it to the repairer the next working day).
Once we have your completed claim form and your car is at an Autosure Authorised Repairer:
- Tell the repairer you have a MBI policy. They’ll assess your car and send us their report.
- They’ll be your main point of contact, but you can call us on 0800 809 700 with any questions.
- They’ll contact you if you need to authorise dismantling of parts to diagnose the fault. If your claim is approved, you won’t need to pay for this.
Once we receive the repairer’s report, we’ll assess your claim:
- If your claim is accepted, the approved repairs will be completed and the repairer will confirm to you your excess amount(s) and any costs not covered by your policy. If there’s more than one unrelated claim, there will be excesses payable for each. Please don’t authorise any repairs before we accept your claim, as these costs won’t be covered.
- If your claim isn’t covered, we’ll explain why by email.
Once the approved repairs are completed:
- We’ll pay the repairer for your covered repair costs.
- The repairer will let you know your car is ready. When you collect it, you’ll pay the repairer your policy excess(es) and any non-covered costs.
- You’ll be free to drive your car away with confidence for the road ahead.
Protecting Your Car
Your car is a valuable asset and can be expensive to fix. So, as well as protecting you with insurance, we want to let you know about a few things you can do to keep your car running well and extend its life:
- Have it serviced regularly (see your policy wording for details), and ensure it has a current WOF and registration. These steps will not only keep your policy valid, they are legal requirements to protect you and other road users as well.
- If you know your car has a defect that needs repair, it’s important not to drive it until the repairs are completed.
- Regularly check the engine oil level, tyre pressure/condition, coolant level (when engine is cold) and lights.
